One 2 One Communication
Our Research has shown that our residents get a twinkle in their eye
when staff and visitors spend time talking to them on a One 2 One basis.
We have tried many things to make our residents lives happier and more
content and aside from our regular activities organised by Tina (Activities co-ordinator), We know that there is
nothing like a good chin wag to make them feel good and bring more pleasure into their lives.
Our Points of Pleasure initiative that we launched early March came
with great success but also highlighted the fact that many residents are not necessarily stimulated by games, music
and entertainment. We have taken this feedback on board and realise that sometimes the simple things in life work
best.
One of the first hurdles we came across is the amount of resources it would take to
give our residents this level of time and input. As a home we certainly could not afford to employ enough staff to
give each resident a number of hours of one on one input per day. This is usually where most homes would stop and
say that this is something which just can not be done but we at Flixton Manor believe that our residents happiness
is one of our primary goals.
With this is mind we looked to the volunteer sector to provide this level of input
to our residents and after many emails and telephone conversations we are happy to have found a number of
volunteers to spend time chatting to our residents on a One 2 One basis. We are about to take on a number of young
volunteers who either require work experience or simply want to give something
back to society. This kind of work is no doubt very rewarding for many people who can clearly see the joy they will
bring to our residents lives. There is nothing nicer than putting a smile on someone's face and building
relationships with elderly people who have some real stories to tell.
We are very pleased with where we are going with this and are confident that this
initiative will vastly improve the quality of our residents
lives.
